Bringing aviation on a path to net-zero emissions by 2050 requires a doubling of historical fuel efficiency gains of aircraft, a rapid roll-out of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs), and the market entry of novel propulsion aircraft in the mid-2030s (Mission Possible Partnership, 2022).


AAIS, together with Boeing and the Singapore Energy Centre are proud to present this workshop centered around the theme of sustainable aviation. Join experts from the aviation industry, public sector, and academia to discuss efforts and challenges of decarbonizing aviation, including future aircraft concepts, renewable energies, and other technological innovations.

    Chief Sustainability Officer and Director (Air Transport) of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore

    Daniel first joined CAAS in 2004 as an Assistant Manager in the Corporate Affairs Division handling corporate planning and organisational development initiatives such as strategic planning, Balanced Scorecard and Knowledge Management. He transferred to the Air Transport Division in 2007.

    In the Air Transport Division, Daniel headed a team responsible for managing Singapore’s aviation relations with countries in Northeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East and members of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

    Appointed Division Head of Aviation Industry Division in 2010, Daniel oversaw the development of new programmes to boost productivity, grow businesses as well as attract and develop manpower for the aviation sector. These included the establishment of the Aviation Development Fund, the rollout of the Air Transport Industry Transformation Map and the implementation of SkillsFuture initiatives in the aviation sector. Daniel also oversaw the Unmanned Aviation Programme Office, which was formed to help shape the development of the unmanned aviation sector in Singapore.

    Daniel was appointed Director of the Air Transport Division in 2017. He develops and implements policies to promote a vibrant and sustainable aviation eco-system and build a competitive air hub for Singapore. Daniel also represents Singapore in various international fora such as the ASEAN Air Transport Working Group and serves a lead negotiator on bilateral air services matters. Daniel was the lead negotiator for ASEAN for the landmark ASEAN-European Union Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement.

    In 2022, Daniel was concurrently appointed as the Chief Sustainability Officer, to develop, implement and review domestic and international climate change targets, policies and strategies across CAAS and the Singapore aviation eco-system.

    Daniel received his undergraduate education at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, USA, where he graduated magna cum laude with a double major in Economics and Government.

    Michael Edwards joined The Boeing Company in August 2011 and is the Director of Boeing Research & Technology – Asia Pacific based in Melbourne, Australia. He carries executive responsibility for delivery of the Company’s research portfolio in the Asia Pacific region. He oversees a highly collaborative research program across the region focussed on the growth and prosperity of the Boeing enterprise globally. In his capacity as Director of BR&T – Asia Pac Michael is a member of the BR&T Global Technology Leadership Team.

    Prior to joining Boeing Michael worked with the Commonwealth Scientific & Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) for 11 years. At CSIRO he held the position of General Manager, CSIRO Performance & Evaluation including Flagship Operations from 2008, as well as fulfilling an overseas posting as Senior Technical Advisor to Boeing based in Seattle, USA from 2005 – 2008. Michael also held the role of Business Development Manager for CSIRO Atmospheric Research based in Melbourne from 2000-2005. Prior to his experience with CSIRO Michael also worked for some 15 years in the plastics, chemicals and petrochemicals industries in Australia, including 12 years with Orica Australia Ltd (formerly ICI Australia). Michael has a Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry from Monash University as well as a Graduate Certificate in Business Administration (Executive) from Monash Business School.

    Michael was awarded Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Technology & Engineering (ATSE) in 2014 and is a member of the ATSE Victorian Division Committee. He is also the Boeing executive focal for the University of Queensland Steering Committee; a member of the RMIT University Sir Lawrence Wackett Aerospace Research Centre Industry Advisory Board; and a member of the Swinburne University School of Business & Law Industry Advisory Board. At CSIRO Michael was a member of teams awarded Boeing’s Supplier of the Year in 2011 and a CSIRO Medal for Research Excellence in 2011. He is also a Boeing recipient of the CSIRO Medal for Health, Safety and Environment Achievement in 2019 and was recognised with a Distinguished Leadership Award by Aviation / Aerospace Australia in 2022.

    Dr. James Wang, Director of the eVTOL Research & Innovation Centre and a professor at Nanyang Technological University enjoys teaching Aircraft Performance and Aircraft Design to inspire the next generation of engineers. His motto is “If it can be dreamt, it can be built.”

    In 2013, WIRED Magazine named Dr. James Wang “the Steve Jobs of Rotorcraft” for his ability to think “outside the box” for inventing the world’s first all-electric VTOL (vertical take off and landing) aircraft, the AgustaWestland Project Zero, that sparked the imagination and the race to develop Advanced Air Mobility. Prior to becoming a professor, Dr. Wang held several executive leadership positions and has 30 years of experience in aerospace and high-tech industries; including as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Vice President of R&D at Leonardo Helicopters and led Strategic Sales and worked on numerous famous helicopter designs at Sikorsky Aircraft.

    Dr. Wang is an internationally renowned expert in manned/unmanned eVTOL aircraft and helicopter designing and operation. His expertise spans across technology and business in the aviation and eVTOL industry and his advice is highly sought after. He received his bachelor degrees in Aeronautics & Astronautics and in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science from M.I.T., a master’s and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from University of Maryland, and a master’s from M.I.T. Sloan Business School. Dr. Wang holds many patents and major international awards including these distinguished awards: Royal Aeronautical Society Fellow and Gold Team Award, VFS Honorary Fellow, Grover Bell Award, UTC George Mead Gold Award, NASA Research Award, and the Italian National Innovation Grand Prize.

    Director, CSIRO Futures

    James is the Director of CSIRO Futures, the strategic advisory arm of Australia’s national science agency. He leads a team that builds on CSIRO’s deep research expertise to help clients create sustainable growth and competitive advantage by harnessing technology and innovation. He works with senior decision makers in some of Australia’s largest companies and government to develop evidence-based strategies to address significant opportunities and challenges.

    In this role, he also leads a number of national-scale initiatives, including the Australian National Outlook 2019, a multi-year project that combines input from more than 50 senior Australian leaders with CSIRO’s integrated modelling to identify the key drivers that will underpin Australia’s future. He has also overseen the development of CSIRO’s industry roadmaps series, including the National Hydrogen Roadmap, the Space Industry Roadmap, and the Low Emissions Technology Roadmap.

    He has more than 20 years of experience working with government and commercial clients across four continents in a diverse range of industries including energy, resources, financial services, manufacturing, and high-tech. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

    Dr. Arun Muley is a Boeing and ASME Fellow and an internationally recognized thermal management leader. At Boeing Research and Technology, he is leading thermal technology portfolio and responsible for development of enterprise strategy and its execution. He is also Boeing’s Southeast Asia Technology Director and Global Integrator for Boeing Additive Manufacturing (BAM) and Integrated Vehicle Systems. His prior positions include R&D Manager at Koch Heat Transfer, and Principal Engineer at Honeywell Aerospace. His research is focused on development of next generation multidisciplinary thermal technology, employing thin-wall AM, novel materials, and enhanced heat transfer. Dr. Muley, a Fellow of ASME, has held several professional leadership roles, which include past chair of the Heat Transfer Division and the Process Industries Divisions of ASME. He received his PhD and MS from the University of Cincinnati, and BS from the National Institute of Technology, Calicut, Kerala, India.

    Professor Liu Bin, Distinguished Professor, is Senior Vice Provost (Faculty & Institutional Development) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). Prior to taking up this appointment on 1 January 2022, she has served as Vice President (Research and Technology) since September 2019. She is concurrently Head of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering until 30 June 2022.

    Liu Bin graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Nanjing University, and PhD in Chemistry from NUS. She had postdoctoral training at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She joined NUS as an Assistant Professor in 2005, and was promoted to full Professorship in 2016.

    Liu Bin is a leader in the field of organic functional materials, who has been well-recognised for her contributions in polymer chemistry and applications of organic nanomaterials for biomedical research, environmental monitoring and energy devices. She is named among the World's Most Influential Scientific Minds and the Top 1% Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate. She is a prolific researcher with over 450 publications and holds 30 patents with 16 of them licensed to different companies in US, UK, and Asia. In 2014, she co-founded Luminicell, an NUS spin-off company that produces organic luminescent nanoparticles for use in biomedical applications.

    Liu Bin has an impressive list of accolades to her name, including the National Science and Technology Young Scientist Award (2008), L'Oréal Women in Science National Fellowship (2011), Materials in Society Lectureship (2015), the President’s Technology Award (2016), and the American Chemical Society ACS Nano Lectureship Award (2019), which honours three award recipients from around the world who have significantly impacted the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. In 2021, she bagged the Kabiller Young Investigator’s Award in Nanoscience and Nanomedicine, and was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Centenary Prize.

    Liu Bin is an international member of the US National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the Singapore Academy of Engineering, Singapore National Academy of Sciences, Asia Pacific Academy of Materials, and Royal Society of Chemistry. She serves on the editorial advisory boards of more than a dozen top peer-reviewed chemistry and materials journals. Since 2019, she serves as the Deputy Editor to launch and develop ACS Materials Letters, a flagship materials journal of the American Chemical Society.

    Liu Bin has been instrumental in developing vibrant innovation clusters across faculties, growing the NUS Sustainability Cluster, and recruiting talents for her department and other programmes. She is especially passionate about nurturing the next generation of research leaders and encouraging more women to pursue careers in science and engineering.

    Professor at Nanyang Technology University

    Sameer Alam is an Associate Professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. He is the Deputy Director of Air Traffic Management Research Institute leading research on AI & Data Analytics applied to Air Transportation. He is also the Co-Director of Saab-NTU Joint Lab leading research on Machine Learning for Digital and Remote Tower. He is leading a research team of 20 scientist and 6 PhD students to create the next generation of AI-Human Hybrid ATM system.

    Sameer obtained PhD in Computer Sc. (2008) specializing in Artificial Intelligence from University of New South Wales (UNSW), Australia and Master's. in Computer Sc. (1999) from BIT, Mesra, India. His post-doctoral research, on developing Artificial Intelligence algorithms for future air traffic concept evaluation, was sponsored by EUROCONTROL (2009-2010) and Air Services Australia (2010-2011).

    In 2011, Sameer was appointed University Lecturer at UNSW, Canberra in Australia and was promoted to University Senior Lecturer in 2015. He has also been a visiting scientist at NASA Ames, California (2011, hosted by Dr Banavar Sridhar) and at École Nationale de l'Aviation Civile (French Civil Aviation University) in Toulouse (2016-2017, hosted by Prof Daniel Delahaye). He has also worked with Civil Aviation Affairs Bahrain as Senior Air Traffic Analyst (2002-2005).

    His research interest are in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms applied to Air Traffic Management and Airport Operations. His expertise are in collision risk, conflict detection and resolution, aviation emission, air traffic sequencing/scheduling, runway optimization. He has over 100 peer-reviewed research publications in high impact journals and conferences.

    He was appointed Editorial Board member of the Transportation Research-Part C Journal (2018) and to the Program Committee of the highly prestigious FAA-Eurocontrol's US & Europe ATM R&D Seminar (2020).

    He has been CI/Co-CI on several research projects for the CAAS, Singapore, International Civil Aviation organization (ICAO), Air Services Australia, Eurocontrol and Civil Aviation Authority, Bahrain. He is also the Managing Guest Editor for special issue on Artificial Intelligence in air traffic management for Transport Research Part-C, and invited reviewer for Safety Science, ACM Intelligent Systems, IEEE Trans. on Intelligent Transport Systems, European Journal of Operations Research, Applied Soft Computing, IEEE Trans on Evolutionary Computation.

    In 2019, Sameer launched the 1st International conference on Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics for Air Transportation (IEEE AIDA-AT) in Singapore. He was also an organizing co-chair for the 28th Australasian Joint conference on Artificial Intelligence, Canberra, Australia 2016 and conference session chair/member PC for the: -IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation, Brisbane, Australia, 2013 -29th IEEE Digital Avionics Systems Conference, Utah, USA, 2010, -Ph.D. Symposium, Australian Conference on Artificial Life, Sydney, Australia, 2005 . -7th International Conference on Research in Air Transport, ICRAT-2018, -Barcelona, Spain, 2018 -22nd Australasian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence, Brisbane Australia 2009 , -1st IEEE Symposium on Artificial Life, Hawaii, USA 2007. -International Conference on Neural Information Processing, Shanghai, China, 2011.

    Dr Ho Chaw Sing is the co-founder CEO of NAMIC (National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster), a Singapore government platform initiative incepted in 2015 to catalyse innovation and scale industrial adoption of digital additive manufacturing technologies. Before joining the public sector, he spent several years with HP Singapore and Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing (now part of Globalfoundries), where he undertook various executive roles in technology and product development, as well as global business operations in manufacturing and supply chain.

    A technology-for-good advocate, Chaw Sing is passionate about nurturing deep tech start-ups and is a frequent speaker at AM forums intersecting technology, industry and policy. As Adjunct Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) College of Design and Engineering, he lectures on Industry 4.0 topics in the areas of cyber-physical integration, computer-aided design and digital manufacturing technologies. Chaw Sing co-chairs the ISO/TC 261 Additive Manufacturing Chair’s Advisory Group and the AM Technical Committee under Singapore Standards Council. He also serves in the ASTM AM Centre of Excellence Steering Committee and the Technology Advisory Panel at the Singapore Maritime Institute, among others. A prolific inventor in his early career, he holds 48 US/international patents. Chaw Sing earned his doctorate (Ph.D) in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Bachelor’s (honours) degree in Electrical Engineering with a major in Microelectronics, both from NUS.

    Sustainability Policy and Partnerships at Boeing International

    Jacqueline is Boeing’s Global Sustainability Policy and Partnerships lead for Southeast Asia, based in Singapore. She focuses on public policy advocacy towards sustainable aviation, as well as facilitation of industry and multi-sector collaboration for solutions in decarbonizing aviation.

    Over the last decade, she has held positions with various ministries and agencies in the Singapore government, as well as the Asian Development Bank in the Philippines. Most recently, she was in charge of sustainability and climate action policy advocacy across 13 Asia Pacific cities in C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, a non-profit group focusing on municipal climate action and carbon emissions reduction pathways. She also led various sustainable and inclusive development projects in Southeast Asia for ADB, focusing on project financing, government capacity building and pilot project implementation for public-private partnerships, investment promotion, SME and agriculture sector development. In her earlier work with the Energy Market Authority of Singapore, she was in charge of advocacy and partnerships with ASEAN partner governments for energy efficiency and renewables policy. Prior to this, she served in the Ministry of Trade and Industry on ASEAN free trade agreements as a trade negotiator.

    Jacqueline graduated from the Political Science department in the National University of Singapore, and proceeded to complete her Masters degree in Development Economics with the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
